Chapter 14

“What are you doing here?” Suying asked when she saw Kari.

“I received an invitation this morning,” Kari responded. The emperors were having a feast, and they had invited some of their new attendants, along with some old favorites, to attend. The guards had arrived earlier to inform Kari of her invite. She hadn’t wanted to go, though. She liked her new house too much to want to leave. In fact, she had barely left it since moving in. She had lived on her own for four years, but she’d never had her own house before. It was exciting, all things considered.

She wished she could stay there all day without having to see the emperors again. It was a small house with only one courtyard, a common room, servant’s quarters, her room, and a bathroom. It even came with a servant—Ina. Cai Ren had come through on his word to ensure she was assigned to Kari. Even though Ina was technically a servant, Kari had no intention of treating her friend as such. So far, Kari had waited on her more than the other way around.

It seemed only right, after all, Cai Ren wasn’t the only person to keep his word. Jiaorong ordered the guards to punish Ina, and they’d obliged. When she returned from the military district, the guards had dragged her into her quarters and left her on the floor in a pool of her own blood. She’d been a mess, her body limp and weak. Someone had attempted to bandage her back, but it was clear they hadn’t really cared. The bandages had been loosely tied, and they hadn’t even covered all the wounds.

Kari had cleaned and rebandaged her wounds. Over the next few days, she’d waited on Ina. If the roles had been reversed, Kari was sure Ina would do the same for her. Maybe, once Ina healed, Kari could teach her some energy manipulation. She wouldn’t have to teach her anything fancy, just enough for her to form an aura and accelerate healing. It was too late to prevent scarring, but it might help them fade with time.

Shagin had strict rules on teaching outsiders their techniques. Kari would be labeled a traitor, but none of that mattered now. She was the Bearer of the Seed and already an exile. What were they going to do, exile her again?

Suying’s eyebrows scrunched as they stood outside the banquet hall. “But you’re not even ranked. Why would they invite you to their banquet?”

“I guess you haven’t heard. Baoshun promoted me. I’m a first attendant now.”

Suying’s mouth fell open. “Lord Bahoshun favors you? I had heard he called upon you. You are so lucky.”

Lucky… it was an odd choice of words. Kari felt anything but lucky. If she truly were, then none of this would have happened. Then again, maybe it was fate that put her on this path and luck that was getting her through it.

“My lord.” Suying folded her hands in front of her, bowing as Baoshun approached.
